Japanese maples come in many statures, colors, and leaf shapes. So far, we grow two: one is an upright, green-leaved, plain-shaped small tree (shown in the pictures here). Even though it's not particularly special, we like it quite a bit. The other is a red-leaved, more dwarf variety. Although it is quite attractive when it is happy, it's decided to almost croak twice now, losing the majority of its limbs in the process. I haven't figured out why it's so unhappy - the first time I blamed it on the Autumn '01 stealth drought, but this summer we got plenty of rain and it happened again. It finally expired in fall of '04.
