Grows naturally on slopes at high elevations in China. Can't find much information, besides this botanical reference:
Bulb solitary, cylindric; tunic brown, reticulate or subreticulate. Leaves 4--7, linear, 4--5 mm wide, flat, solid, fleshy, apex obtuse. Scape 5--15 cm, slightly compressed, covered with leaf sheaths only at base. Umbel hemispheric, many flowered. Pedicels subequal, 1.5--2 × as long as perianth. Perianth broadly exposed, white; segments with yellowish green midvein, lanceolate, 7--8(--10) × ca. 2 mm. Filaments equal, ca. 1/2 as long as perianth segments. Ovary obconical-globose. Style short; stigma slightly 3-cleft. Fl. Jun.
It bloomed in September the year I started it, on plants perhaps 8 inches tall. Won't be able to judge its real garden presence until next year.

Visitors to this page have left the following comments| Will Meigs | Feb 27, 2006 | We have loads of this gem growing in various areas in our garden. It loves sun and dry soil;its less impressive but it survives in our shady garden too. It makes lots of seeds but doesn't seem to be invasive. I sprinkle the seeds around in the fall to help it spread. Grow it in masses at the edge of the border or path for a great fall show! One of our favorites! |
