Amorpha nana

Amorpha nana
dwarf false indigo
Not too long after emerging in early May

Common name dwarf false indigo
Family fabaceae
Life cycle shrub
Flowers purple
Size 12-36"
Light sun
Cultural notes drought-tolerant

Features vibrant green pinnate leaves and clusters of purple flowers with orange anthers. The fruits are small pods. Native to North America, where it grows in dry prairies and on rocky hillsides. From two seed-starting attempts, I have just one surviving plant, which bloomed in its third year. In spring, new growth starts late (early May in a typical year), so I've learned to be patient, and not yank last year's lifeless remains as I'm doing my spring cleaning.

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away...
