Fan columbine is named for the rounded, curved shape of the leaves (which are otherwise similar to those of other columbines). Our original plants came to us several years ago, as seed from the 'Ministar' cultivar. Some of the originals are still with us (but dwindling in number); they are no more than 6" tall, with nodding small blue/white flowers. Just this year, a number of columbines started blooming in our garden with flowers shaped and colored the same as the 'Ministar's, but larger in both flower size, leaf size, and stature. They also bloom a little later (early May, instead of late April). Since our garden is full of columbines of many kinds, these (like the one pictured here) are most likely hybrids, but since they most closely resemble A. flabellata, that's where I'll file them. Whatever they are, we love them!

I go through the internet trying to find pics of the entire plant but often fail to do so. As for Columbines, I've had great success growing from seed by wintersowing them, but I haven't tried this particular one. I'd say 90% or better germination. Your website is very informative and now I want to try to grow even MORE plants.

- 'Ministar' seed from JLH '00 order. Sixpack with bottom heat, germination starting 17d, total 33%
- 'Ministar' seed from '03 garden. Baggy 70F (50d)-70F with light (10d, no G).
Also sowed to pot set outside (on surface of PgX mix, with grit cover), mid-March; germination started mid-May, total 70%G by late May.
Ma nature does a better job providing germination conditions than I can...
