As its species name indicates, it's Canadian Ginger. If it was American Ginger, it would be called Asarum americana (or somethng like that), just as American Beech is called Fagus americana. All references to Asarum canadense that I've seen (including American books) refer to it as Canada (or Canadian) Ginger. It's a minor mistake, but someone seeking American Ginger at a nursery might be baffled when he/she finds only Canadian and European species!
American here refers not to the US, but to the continent (North America, actually). Asarum canadense is native to both the US and Canada. However, I have no particular reason to have picked that common name (it came from one of my many references, not sure which one), so I'll be happy to change it. |
