Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri'

Asparagus densiflorus 'Sprengeri'
asparagus fern, emerald fern

Common name asparagus fern, emerald fern
Family asparagaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z9-11)
Flowers white
Size 2-3'
Light bright shade

Grown for its feathery foliage. This variety is bushy or trailing, in contrast with the other popularly grown cultivar, 'Myersii', whose upright plume-like habit accounts for its common name 'Foxtail fern'. Both are tender perennials, but appear likely to survive our Houston climate, due to its root hardiness to zone 8. The species is native to South Africa, and can be overly vigorous to the point of invasiveness in favorable climates. Small white flowers, red berries in fall.

In our garden, this plant grows in the following area: houston back yard
