Grown for its bronze foliage that sprays out from a neat tuft. The color is redder than the photo here reveals. I grew this from seed, then read somewhere it was hardly only to zone 7, after which I gave up on having it in the garden - so I was pleasantly surprised when it withstood our zone 6 winter just fine.

I am working on this specie for two years now. I had some solutions to germinate this one in tree weeks at 18/20 degrees. What is your experience with this specie regarding germination?
Regards,
Willem I have updated this page to add my germinating experience. Sounds like your method is quicker! |
| Peter | Jun 04, 2006 | Hello I am interested in growing this orange sedge. I live in victoria australia and can harvest my own seed. Have heard rumours that this sedge may have a seed dormancy. Can you shed some light on this. Would welcome your input into propagation from seed. I have sucessfully propagated via division, but seed would be easier.
Thanks
My record below reflects the only experience I have with its germination, and suggests that at least a cold stratification stage is required, and possibly also a preceding warm stratification stage. Good luck! |
| Willem Koopman | Oct 02, 2006 | Hello ,

| Peter | Oct 25, 2006 | Hi I am still having trouble growing this sedge. Sowed some straight off the plant in March this year gave up on it but it did come up, in July 4mths to germinate. Have stored some seed in the fridge and some in the freezer for 6wks or more, sowed this 5weeks ago stil nothing coming up. Seems like a hard one to grow, i was thinking that being a NZ grass it would require a vernalisation period, however this does not appear aparent. Next step is to try sowing in cold temp ie 2-8oC.
Any one else know how to grow this plant!!! Someone must know, ie the wholesale nurseries must know how!!

- Seed from '03 trade. Baggy 65F (4w) - 35F (6w) - 70F (16%G, 11d). Exposure to light did not result in additional germination
