Cercis chinensis

Cercis chinensis
Chinese redbud
Common name Chinese redbud
Family fabaceae
Life cycle tree (Z6-9)
Flowers white
Size 8-12'
Light sun

Small flowering tree (or large shrub) similar in many respects to our native redbud. Although I received seed for the 'Alba' variety, what I got (after waiting for five years) was clearly the plain species, which means it isn't easy to distinguish from the C. canadensis specimens that have been blooming for years in our garden. Distinguishing features are supposed to be somewhat larger flowers, glossier leaves whose bases are more pronouncedly heart-shaped, and longer seed pods. I'll see if I can document that in photos as our little tree matures. For now, it appears that the blossoms are packed more densely around the branches than on our native redbuds.

Cercis chinensis
Abundant podlet formation right after blooming

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
