It seems no garden is complete without some of those big-flowered clematis hybrids. Our garden features two, both growing on trellises in the side garden. 'Ramona's satiny royal-blue flowers come in an electrifying mass in May. 'Jackmanii', with deep purple flowers, is supposed to be later-blooming, but it too shows off its first flowers in May. For a couple of years, it was lacking a trellis, and just sprawled through the garden - but this spring, we gave it a new upright home.

Different not only in flower, the two hybrids also sport rather distinct seedheads. Jackmanii, above, reminds me of an electric Einstein, while Ramona, at right, has more of a Kurt Cobain aesthetic. I like 'm both.
