The clusters of yellow flowers appear in very early spring, before the leaves arrive, and contrast nicely with the burgundy-tinged patterned bark. Later in the season, it has a simple, understated presence. Not until this year, one mid-September afternoon, did I notice the red fruits - which make it clear why the common name is cornelian cherry. They are tucked away between the leaves, not in immediate view, so I may have missed prior years' fruits.
