Crataegus phaenopyrum

Common name Washington hawthorn
Family rosaceae
Life cycle tree (Z4-8)
Flowers white (spring)
Size 20'
Light sun-part shade
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil (drought-tolerant)

Small tree that lives up to the thorn part of its name - the long rigid spines are certainly a deterrent to would-be climbers. White rose-like flowers appear in spring, but I'm more enamored of the red berries in fall. Our two specimens are among the few survivors of an Arbor Day Society ten free trees assortment that we got in the earliest stages of our garden's evolution.

In our garden, this plant grows in the following areas: front yard, back yard
