New growth emerges in a striking purple mound of velvety foliage in early spring. By the time the yellow flowers appear in mid-spring, the foliage has turned green. Spreads itself around a little bit, but I gladly put up with that.

I have recently become quite enamored with the many varieties of euphorbia and their succulent-like tolerance and toughness in a zone 5 garden. I think these are quite underutilized in most perennial gardens. Thanks for sharing. Your comment indicates that u no longer have this euphorbia in your garden. Too bad...looks like a wonderful rock garden plant and i love the chartreuse color in the spring!
Actually, the absence from our garden is by design. Much as liked this plant, it was too aggressive. After trying to control its reach for years, I decided it had to go altogether. It would still be a nice selection for containers or for covering larger areas of dry slopes. |
| Gayla | Apr 13, 2012 | I suppose the location of where they are growing depends on the colors how agressive it is. I used to live in Indiana. Euphorbia cyparissias (cypress spurge) never did have the initial appearance of purplish. It came up green, had the very light green flowers, then yellow and in the fall, the flowers appeared to be burgundy. These flowers grew under our iron fence, between a sidewalk and a cement retaining wall. I loved them. Then we moved across the river to KY. I can't find these plants anywhere! So very easy to grow and I did not have any 'aggressiveness'.......but I did try to get them to grow the length of the fence. This is our third summer here in KY and I'm still looking for this plant! Thank you for sharing your page...I came here looking for this plant but will go see else you have ......:) |
