self-seeds modestly in our garden
|
One day in late July, I realized that I never bothered to put a photo of this longstanding denizen of our garden on the website. I guess I'm just so used to seeing it around that I don't even think of taking its photo. I had to rectify that situation, but for now you're not getting the most colorful representation of this plant - its best season is spring into early summer, when the new leaves are deep burgundy, contrasting nicely with the yellow flowers. Next spring I'll try to remember. By mid-summer, the leaves have faded to green, and the plant assumes a secondary role - still holding up its own, but no longer stealing the show.
In our garden, this spurge self-seeds modestly - there are always a few to pot up for the sale, and a few to keep our own supply going. But it's nothing like some other spurges, whose prolific volunteering habits can get annoying at times.
