For some reason I was under the impression that this was an annual, so I waited for it to bloom all year. When it hadn't by late November, I looked it up again, and sure enough, it's a perennial (or biennial).
It did return the next year. The rabbits appear to favor it, so only a few survived their browsing. By mid-June, it was seriously starting to consider bursting into flower.
