Common name bigleaf hydrangea Family hydrangeaceae Life cycle shrub (Z5-9) Flowers blue/pink (June) Size 2' Light sun-part shade Cultural notes ordinary garden soil Dependable hydrangea in our garden - it always gets killed to the ground in winter, but it quickly regrows into an attractive shrub, and by late spring it flowers on the new wood - mostly blue, but a little pink sometimes creeps in: our soil must be not quite acidic enough to keep a true blue. Because of the winter-kill, ours never gets taller than about 2'.
