This was a pleasant surprise one late-summer day while weeding a neglected corner of the garden - a single autumn snowflake, in tiny but glorious bloom. I had grown the species from seed a few years ago, and assumed the seedlings had not survived winter. Apparently, just one did. Not much in the way of impact, but a high cuteness factor. I transplanted it to the rock garden, where it may or may not survive (it is marginally hardy in zone 6, and the rock garden is not mulched).
