With foliage much bluer than its American cousin Mertensia virginica, this perennial is native to Japan. After growing it successfully on the edge of our moist shade garden (where it receives part sun), I learned that it prefers well-drained soil - sometimes it's better to be ignorant. But now that I know, I'll probably give this a try in our rock garden as well.
