Penstemon kunthii

Common name Kunth's penstemon
Family plantaginaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z5-10)
Flowers purple-magenta (summer)
Size 24"
Light sun
Cultural notes drought-tolerant

Penstemon from high elevations in Mexico featuring spikes holding a profusion of tubular flowers. Sometimes considered a form of P. campanulatus. I've found it to be a particularly quick-growing species, reaching 12" by early summer of its first year, as shown in the photo at right.

Kunth's penstemon

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
