Twining tender perennial vine, grown as an annual in our climate. Although the seedlings developed nicely inside, the plants didn't do much of anything once placed outside, and only a good fraction perished. But in late summer the survivors finally started twining their heart-shaped leaves up the fence along which I had placed them, and by late August were displaying their flowers. The blooms start as small rounded bells in a deep shade of purple. As they get older, the original bell part develops a lighter shade of rose, while a darker tubular protrusion grows out of its center and proceeds to open - creating a bicolor effect. Up close you can see that all parts of the flower are softly hairy.
