South-central US native, occurs naturally in open woods, prairies, and fields. Started from seed in early 2005, I wasn't sure if our crop had overwintered, and forgot about them until mid-summer 2006, when all of a sudden I noticed a soft-blue flower on a lax plant with hairy stems and leaves. Nice enough, although I haven't figured out yet where in our garden would best suit it. The barbed-hairy seedpods are interesting in their own right, and occur in clusters along the stem.
In spring of 2007, I confirmed the late-rising nature of the plants: their regrowth did not become apparent until early May.
