New growth!

One of the most exciting things about early spring in the garden is all the different ways in which new growth emerges from the cold soil. As a tribute to those brave new plants, I put together a little collage of photos taken in the earliest days of April 2004.

The purples are amazing! This is Thalictrum flavum

Bleeding heart up close

Baptisia pendula (white false indigo) sends up asparagus-like dusky shoots

The variegated horseradish doesn't show any of its variegation yet

Cypress spurge comes in purple too.

Peonies sends bright red stalks up

Lovage eventually growth into a towering plant, but its glossy baby growth is tender as can be.
