Crithmum maritimum

Crithmum maritimum
First-year plants in August
sea fennel; rock samphire
Aren't those seedlings darling? Seed leaves are strappy, but the first true leaves look like pudgy ducks' feet!

Common name sea fennel; rock samphire
Family apiaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z7-10)
Flowers chartreuse
Size 12-24"
Light sun
Cultural notes well-drained soil
From seed germinate at room temperature
detailed seed-starting info below

Grassy blue-green leaves on densely branched plants, with umbels of greenish flowers. Good for rock gardens. Too bad I haven't had any luck overwintering these: no survivors in both of my attempts. Hoping my third attempt this year will provide a break-through (a mild winter would help, since this species is rated hardy only to zone 7).

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away...
