One of the first cranesbills we ever grew. Starting a little later than most of the perennial geraniums, it flowers for a long time through summer. The billowing mounds of foliage are attractive all year; trimming spent flowerstalks off helps keep the appearance neat (but we hardly ever get around to that). The plants grow from long taproots, which makes them tough garden citizens, but also makes them difficult to transplant – they sulk even when transplanted in mid-spring, but eventually perk up again. Although this page is still named 'Buxton's Variety', our current plants are the great-great-great-grandkids of our original plants, so they may be closer to the unselected plain species. Which is just fine by me.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
