Penstemon wrightii

Penstemon wrightii
Texas rose penstemon; Wright's penstemon
Penstemon wrightii

Common name Texas rose penstemon; Wright's penstemon
Family plantaginaceae
Life cycle perennial
Flowers pink-red (spring)
Size 24-36"

Robust stems with glaucous leaves often clasping; pink to red flowers. Native to western Texas. My first success at getting this to bloom was in a hypertufa trough. That plant stayed small, so when a much larger plant bloomed the following year, from a single seedling I had set out in the rock garden, I didn't realize it was the same species. The trough specimen died soon after flowering. I hope that's not the general habit of this penstemon, because I like the plant, and would prefer it stick around a while.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
