Allium rotundum ssp. jajlae

Allium rotundum ssp. jajlae
purple-flower garlic
Synonym(s) Allium scorodoprasum ssp. jajlae
Common name purple-flower garlic
Family liliaceae
Life cycle perennial
Flowers purple

Rounded flowerheads on this allium; on close-up inspection the individual petals are a subtle bicolor, but from a bit further away the flower clusters look like deep pink-purple balls. Only a few flowers so far on our second-year plants, but they have the potential to be nicer in overall appearance than most of the other round-headed onions I've tried.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
