Allium sphaerocephalon

Allium sphaerocephalon
Common name drumstick allium
Family alliaceae
Life cycle perennial bulb (Z4-9)
Flowers purple (early summer)
Size 3'
Light sun
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil (tolerates summer drought)
Seed ripenslate September

About as vertical a habit as you can get - the stalk goes straight up, with a dense globular flower cluster at the top. At 2" around, the blooms aren't as large as those of some other ornamental onions, but they have their own grace. The photos below show the flowers' progression through bloom

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
