About as vertical a habit as you can get - the stalk goes straight up, with a dense globular flower cluster at the top. At 2" around, the blooms aren't as large as those of some other ornamental onions, but they have their own grace. The photos below show the flowers' progression through bloom

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. About my plant portraits

Madster | Jun 23, 2008 | Thank you for the beautiful photos and information. We have these plants coming up in our garden, and my husband is convinced they are weeds, but I like the tall stems, and so was able to convince him to leave them be until after they bloomed, which seemed to be taking forever. Now, in late June, they have the small, tightly packed, green, blossom heads, and the husband was even more convinced they were a weed, since only weeds have green, lackluster blooms...lol!
Now they have "safe passage," and I will transplant them in the fall to a designated area, to protect them in the future, but they are lovely randomly coming up in my garden.
Thanks again!

Laurie Brown | Jul 31, 2011 | Ah, hah! This is what I have now from some unknown allium seeds I brought home with me. Thank you for those pictures! Nice to be able to put a name to a face, er, flower. Great website, BTW. |
