I'm not sure if the weedy amaranths I encounter in our garden (not counting spiny amaranth, which is easy to distinguish) belong to the same species, or to several similar ones. One day I may do the research, for now I'll just share a few photos of ones I've come across.

Tom | Dec 08, 2015 | I live in Mass and see probably a half dozen of weedy native Amaranth species here. About three years ago I bought seeds for some ornamental varieties (Hopi, Burgundy, Warihio, Garnet), which apparently crossed with some of the weeds. The next year I got spectacular new results, and which persist yearly from their hybridized seed. Some are very tall with brilliant pink/red stems and veins. Also some are short. Various plants have white, black, or brown seeds, so I think there must be several hybrids going on. Neighbors ask what these are. I hate to dig any up to make room for my more legitimate tomatoes, peppers, etc. Cool. For what it's worth, I think it's perhaps more likely that your interesting offspring comes from interbreeding between your ornamental varieties than from promiscuity with the weedier species. But both are certainly possible. |
