Ananas comosus

Ananas comosus

Common name pineapple
Family bromeliaceae
Life cycle tender perennial (Z10-12)
Flowers purple/yellow
Size 3'
Light sun
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil, not too dry

To the best of my recollection, I never grew a pineapple plant from a pineapple fruit top as a kid – so I'm playing a kid now, setting the remains of a recent family fruit indulgence right into the soil of our backyard border. It helps that Houston's steamy climate provides a long warm season for the plant to develop. I have no intentions of trying to save our plant through winter (it can't take any frost, and is unhappy even at low temperatures above freezing), so one season is all it will get. The first photo at right was taken a couple of weeks after planting – still alive, but not exactly pushing up new growth yet. Let's hope it gets prettier.

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away...
