Anisocampium niponicum 'Pictum' and 'Regal Red'

Synonym(s) Athyrium niponicum
Common name Japanese painted fern
Family dryopteridaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z4-8)

Light part shade

Popular fern species, whose named cultivars extend the normal green spectrum of ferns in much more interesting directions. The commonly grown 'Pictum' cultivar has silvery-patterned fronds. We grew our first one for years in the shade garden, but I think its taller neighbors smothered it in the end. A replacement specimen is now living in our woodland garden area, where it appears to be quite happy. It is joined there by our other, more recently purchased cultivar named 'Regal Red', which as expected has more red-spectrum hues in its color pattern.

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away...

One or more images of this plant are included in my stock photo catalog
