I'm not sure if this is a named cultivar of common columbine or a hybrid. It came to us as seed from the HPS/MAG seed exchange, collected from the Phildelphia-area garden of Charles Cresson. He traces its origins back to "Malcolm Whipple's Long Island garden" in the early 1980s. I've been able to find no other references to this variety online.
Whatever its heritage, this is a pretty little columbine. Like Nora Barlow types, this one has double flowers - but in the finer details, this is a more refined plant. Even though I list the color as "pink", that's just the overall impression from a distance. in reality, the flowers are cream-colored, with rose streaking along part of each petal. The flowers overall are very regularly shaped, almost like little dangling balls. Requires up-close inspection for the full effect
