Aralia spinosa

Aralia spinosa
devil's walking stick; Hercules' club thorns
Common name devil's walking stick; Hercules' club
Family araliaceae
Life cycle small tree
Flowers white
Size to 30 ft

Small tree with white flowers in summer (ours hasn't flowered yet). It brandishes fierce-looking thorns, making it look devilish indeed when seen up close. From a bit further away, it's actually an elegant tree. Ours is planted along the back of our conifer-lined back berm, so we don't often see it.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
