Common name Japanese ardisia; marlberry
Family primulaceae
Life cycle shrub (Z8-10)
Flowers white to pale pink (summer)
Size 8-12"

Low-growing evergreen shrub, commonly used as a groundcover for its mat of dark green, leathery leaves. Clusters of white (or pale-pink) flowers appear in mid-summer, and are followed by red fruits in autumn. Cannot tolerate full sun or drought. Native to woodlands in east Asia, and has shown invasive tendencies in Florida. After overwintering in our garden, the first flowers appeared in the second half of May. Nothing spectacular, but charming enough up close.

In our garden, this plant grows in the following area: houston front yard
