Common name Japanese painted fern Family dryopteridaceae Life cycle perennial (Z4-8) Size 18" Light part shade Popular fern with silvery-patterned fronds. We grew our first one for years in the shade garden, but I think its taller neighbors smothered it in the end. We bought a new specimen, which will get a more up-front position in the garden. For now it's overwintering in the veggie garden.
