Catananche caerulea

Catananche caerulea

Common name Cupid's dart
Family asteraceae
Life cycle perennial (Z4-9)
Flowers blue (summer)
Size 18-24"
Light sun

We've grown this grassy-leaved composite several times now. It's not particularly long-lived, usually petering out after two or three years - and it hasn't thus far self-seeded during the stints in our garden, so that it needs repurchasing (or restarting from seed) to keep around. Every once in a while, we indulge, because its blue flowers are charming in summer. Surprisingly, the one we bought this year turned out to be a mostly-white specimen - although upon fading, its petals reverted to a splotchy blue that's quite nice too.
