Rugged clumps of divided leaves, with tall upright stems of creamy pincushion flowers. Definitely back of the border. Ours is definitely ill-placed, in a corner of the side garden, where its sparse, open habit provides a look through to the white vinyl siding, rather than a lush leafy backdrop. I'll be moving it to a more naturalistic area of the garden this fall.

I have been growing these majestic plants for about 8 years and have always propagated by division in Spring. That's the easy way - provided I remember to look for the young plants before the border closes in around them with other growth - then it's out of sight, out of mind! The next time I think of it is when I look out one June day to see a familiar flower bud swaying around in the breeze, 5 feet off the ground, surrounded by those distinctive leaves. Then I remember the friends I had promised to supply with one. |
