Chenopodium album |
|
Common name |
lamb's quarters |
Family |
chenopodiaceae |
Life cycle |
annual |
Flowers |
greenish white |
Distinctive even as a seedling, with its white-felted, irregularly-margined leaves. Ours seldom get much larger than the one pictured here, because they are fairly easy to spot and very easy to pull. Not a problem weed, really, but it keeps coming back.

Dan | Jul 29, 2012 | I live in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Since I am not so good with plants (but quite an expert green thumb at growing weeds!), I noticed this exact plant growing in my back patio area last summer, and I loved the greenery effect of it. The largest ones grew to about 4.5 feet tall with branches spreading about 2 feet from the center at the base. I let them flower and seed (keeping many of the seeds, as I was terrified they would never come back after the winter was over), and this year, without planting a single seed, they are growing everywhere (!) in my back patio area. It's amazing that I can grow something I find pleasing, it will take up space like bushes do, and I had no idea it was also edible; but I also learned it takes in toxins (like the occasional insecticide I use), so I probably won't eat it. Well, maybe one leaf just to see what it's like... For once, something I like and can grow! Can I call myself a bona-fide vegetable gardener now? :-) |
