Clematis viorna

Common name northern leatherflower; vasevine
Family ranunculaceae
Life cycle perennial (Z4-8)
Flowers pink
Size vine to 6'
Light sun-part shade
Cultural notes well-drained soil

Native to the Eastern US, this vine bears nodding bell-shaped flowers in a charming powder-coated shade of purple-pink. Trying to get them established from seed (not an easy task) – wish me luck!

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away...

Seed-starting details for this plant

  1. Seed from NARGS '11/'12 exchange. Soaked 1d, removed tails, to baggy with a few crystals of GA-3 sprinkled around seeds, for 2d. Then moved to fresh filter at 70F (75%G, 12-25d). Roots developed nicely, no early signs of top growth.
