Crocus vernus (and hybrids) |
 |
|
| Crocus buds rising as sleek spears from the barren winter soil |
|
| I like how crocus just works its way through whatever happened to get planted atop it - here, a bit of sedum in the rock garden. |
Common name |
spring crocus |
Family |
iridaceae |
Life cycle |
perennial bulb |
Flowers |
various (early spring) |
Size |
6" |
Light |
sun-part shade |
Every year, crocus battles it out with Draba aizoides en hellebores for the honor of first spring bloom (that's not counting Darley heath, since it blooms all winter). This year, one patch of crocus, along our front walk, won the sprint.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. About my plant portraits
