Grown from seeds received in trade, this was a most welcome surprise - we love the way the dark purple foliage combines with the red-to-deep pink flowers. Not sure of the true cultivar name - I haven't been able to find any references to this strain. After several seasons of collecting seed and starting new ones, I struck out, and was dahlialess for years. Then I traded for new seed, offspring of 'Bishop of Llandaff', which is also known for its dark foliage. Our plants didn't have the proper leaf color, and the flower colors are all over the map, but they are quite nice anyway.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. Seed for this plant is included on my seed trade list About my plant portraits

I have been using commercial seeds, and just in the process of learning how to collect and grow from my own seeds. One of the plants I grew this year was from Park Seed cat number 0665 named Dahlia x hybrida Bishop's Children, which looks similar to your Jazz. |
Pam | May 16, 2014 | Why have you had so many plants slip away? That's part of gardening, especially when you're always trying new plants, many of which aren't ideally suited to the climate conditions. Of course for Dahlias, it's just a matter of forgetting to pull and save some tubers one fall, because they certainly aren't hardy here. |
