Delphinium delavayi

Delphinium delavayi

Delphinium delavayi

Family ranunculaceae
Life cycle perennial
Flowers blue (June)
Size 2-3'
Light sun-part shade
Seed ripensmid-July

Chinese species of perennial larkspur. Flowers are a vivid blue and hairy (especially obvious on the buds), with prominent bees. The whole flower looks like Dr. Seuss might have designed it, especially the crumply-curvy back end. Each is attached to the flower stem in alternating fashion; the overall effect packs a visual punch. Growth habit is upright, about mid-way in height between the taller hybrids and dwarf varieties. Black crinkly seeds.

Attractively cut leaves

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

Seed-starting details for this plant

  1. Seed from '05 trade. Baggy 35F (15d; 10%G, 15d) - 65F (80%G, 2-8d)
  2. Same seed as above. Baggy 35F (17d) - 65F (no G, 20d)
  3. Seed from '09 garden. Baggy 35F (16d) - 70F (3%G, 18d).
    Baggy 70F (42%G, 8-16d)
  4. Seed from '10 garden, stored cold since harvest. Baggy 70F (52%G, 8-15d)

Seed apparently does not maintain viability for long. From the trials above, it's not clear if a cold stage is helpful - it may depend on the age or previous treatment of the seed.
