Dioscorea polystachya

Dioscorea polystachya
cinnamon vine, Chinese yam
Synonym(s) Dioscorea batatas
Common name cinnamon vine, Chinese yam
Family dioscoreaceae
Life cycle perennial

Not sure yet if I'll classify this as a weed or as an ornamental in the long run - for now, because I like the leaves, I'll throw it in with the desirable crowd. The unusually shaped, glossy leaves look cool on the vine that's twirling its way up our copper trellis. Ground leaves are heart-shaped and very glossy, which makes them easy to identify among other plantings. But I don't recall planting it there, so chances are it has found its way into our garden by natural distribution. I may be setting myself up for future problems by not eradicating it, since its tubers reportedly settle in pretty deep. Ah well, I can always kick myself later.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
