Seed ripens | late October |
In its second year in our garden, the plants we set out in the inhospitable street-side end of the driveway bed gave just one flower, shown above left. It looked more like Tennessee coneflower than purple coneflower to me. When the flowers just open, they are even more resolutely thread-petaled (above right), but the petals proceed to get a bit wider as they start pointing downward (upper left). Photos I've found online for this species are all over the map in appearance, so I'm not sure if my plants are the real thing - but they are definitely different from regular purple coneflower. More a curiosity than a stunner, but then I like curiosities.

| The stand along our curb has been getting a little more robust every year; quite a nice display by now |
|
| Leaves are also much narrower than those of purple coneflower. Here they are shown shortly after emerging in late April. |

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. One or more images of this plant are included in my stock photo catalog About my plant portraits
