Erythrina vespertilio

Erythrina vespertilio

Common name bat-wing coral-tree
Family fabaceae
Life cycle tree
Flowers red
Size 15-25'
Light sun-part shade
Cultural notes well-drained soil

Curious-looking tree from Australia, whose common name refers to the shape of its leaves. In my climate, it will not develop into a tree, so I'm unlikely to see its scarlet flowers, which appear after the leaves drop in winter, nor its thorny, corky bark – but if I can enjoy a good clump of Seussian foliage, I'll take it.

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away...
