Seed ripensmid-June

Species native to Europe and western Asia. We grew ours from traded seed - the Thompson & Morgan catalog entry for the 'Orchid Blue' cultivar describes it as a short-lived, self-seeding perennial, but more reliable sources say it's an annual. Unlike perennial cranesbills, whose seed ripens over a prolonged period, here the flowers come in a big flush, followed by the seed ripening up all at once. The photo at right shows a few spent seedheads that have already shot their seeds away, a few that are ready to shoot, along with a straggler flower.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.
