Dozens of showy 3" sunflowers blooming September until frost. This is a large plant, reaching shrub-like proportions by late summer. It has a tendency to splay open when it gets top-heavy with flowers, with flowering stems flopping over this way and that. While that was a bit of a liability with its original placement in the middle of a large border, it actually makes for a serendipitously charming display in combination with the stream coming down from our waterfall.

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away... About my plant portraits

Visitors to this page have left the following commentsPD Wythe, Mn | Dec 21, 2008 | Rob, I found by accident that if they are cut back to about 1' very late, like in August, they will bloom in a much more manageable size. I haven't gotten the timing down exactly yet, but it's sort of like doing what buffalos do, much them down in summer. Evidently the plants are adapted to this behavior because they still send up flowers. |
