Hibiscus 'Purpureus variegatus'

Hibiscus 'Purpureus variegatus'
variegated rose of sharon
Common name variegated rose of sharon
Family malvaceae
Life cycle shrub (Z5-9)
Flowers dark maroon (summer)
Light sun
Cultural notes ordinary garden soil

Now here's an unusual rose of sharon! It has cream-and-green variegated foliage, attractive all growing season long, and dark maroon button flowers. Buttons, because they never open up like a regular rose of sharon flower does. This not only looks cool, but it also makes them last a lot longer. I'm surprised this is not more commonly grown.

Hibiscus 'Purpureus variegatus'
Once in a while a branch will come in with all-white leaves. Not necessarily pretty, but looks interesting anyway...

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston.

One or more images of this plant are included in my stock photo catalog
