Useful shrub, covered in blooms in summer. It quickly fills out into a dense shrub, so it works well as a visual screen. Ours, a purplish-blue variety, is planted where our Lane garden meets the neighbors' driveway. Blooms start in July.

We left this plant behind in our Pennsylvania garden (and wish it well); we don't grow it in Houston. About my plant portraits

kmoore652 | Aug 10, 2009 | I planted a Hibiscus syriacus-purple, tree form the end of June this year. It was doing well at first, bright green leaves, and soon it had several buds. However I soon noticed the beetles loved the new plant as much as I did! Now the leaves are dried out and yellow, and the buds never did open up. Is the whole tree destroyed? I know now I should have done something about the beetles, but wonder if it is too late--will it possibly bloom next year? I'm not so sure the beetles are to blame for your Rose of Sharon's leaves being dried up and yellow - it could be transplant stress resulting from hot weather with not much of a root system. I wouldn't worry about this year's flowers; if the plant puts out new leaves, it should be fine, and would likely bloom next year. |
terry | Aug 24, 2013 | Hi please what is name of pretty cream variegated hibiscus with tight double purple red flowers? That would be Hibiscus 'Purpureo-Variegatus'. |
