My identification of this lovely hydrangea is tentative, since I lost records of its original purchase - but it's a close fit suggested by online gardening friends (let me know if you disagree). What I am sure of is that it's our favorite hydrangea. It stays compact and full-foliaged throughout the year. The flowers start in June on the light end of the spectrum - white tinged with pink or lavender. As the summer progresses, they undergo a range of color changes through the purple hues, to wind up in late summer as deep burgundy clusters. Then they persist on the shrub well into fall.
Our specimen is planted close to the house and gets morning and evening sun. It prefers to be protected from hot afternoon sun, unless its soil is reliably moist. Probably due to its sheltered location, we have lots of flowers every year, even after more severe winters.

| joyce sheaffer | Jun 28, 2011 | This has been my very favorite plant and I have many other hydrangeas. Nothing compares to the all season interest of this plant and the fall foliage is spectacular. My plant is about 6 years old and this winter I lost about half of the plant due to a severe winter. A nursery near me is getting some of them in later this week and may break down and buy another one. I have started some new ones from cuttings, but then you're looking at a few years to blooming.
