Ilex aquifolium 'Variegata'

Ilex aquifolium 'Variegata'
variegated English holly
In January, after sub-zero temperatures, the margins have dulled a bit, but it still looks better than anything surrounding it

Common name variegated English holly
Family aquifoliaceae
Life cycle evergreen shrub
Flowers insignificant
Size 5'
Light sun-part shade

When we first created the side garden, we planted a hedge of these variegated hollies to separate it from the neighbors' driveway. The hollies look beautiful when they are happy, but it didn't take long for ours to become bedraggled-looking. They are borderline hardy in our area, and the wind whips through pretty hard in winter. So we dug all but one out and donated them to a different garden; same zone, but in a much more sheltered location, and they've done very well there. We kept just one, and although it is never magnificent, I'm glad it's still around - the variegated leaves are quite nice, especially in autumn, and they even get a berry or two, even though we never managed to acquire a sugardaddy for our ladies. The one would-be stud I acquired by mail order turned out to be a cross-dresser (as you can see by her beautiful berries in the photo below). Pretty in its own right, though.

not a stud

This plant used to grow in our garden, but it slipped away...
