Small broadleaf evergreen shrub or tree native to Florida, with shiny elliptical leaves that are fragrant when crushed. Its flowers are insignificant, but the subsequent fruit have ornamental value. Considered to be more rugged in the garden than most other illicium species, and will even tolerate some drought. The 'Forest Green' cultivar reportedly grows a little smaller than the species (6-12') and may take on a more rounded form – but does not otherwise appear to distinguish itself.
